It’s easy to get carried away with exciting projects and neglect your own brand. Your brand is not only important for attracting new customers, it’s also important for your business culture. This internal branding is known as your employer brand.
Employer brand is how your company is perceived by your current and potential employees. Having a clear employer brand can be a powerful recruiting tool, motivator, and creates a culture of success. Some best practices to have your employees “live your brand” include:
- Promoting culture and rewards
- Create consistent messaging of organizations values
- Show what success in the company looks like
- Adopt a community concept to your strategy
- Promote awards and accreditations
We know how important it is to keep up a company’s brand, and at the Marketing Garage, we work hard as a team to tune up our employer brand. In this blog, you will learn how an employer brand is important, and 4 ways we developed and tuned our employer brand that you might find helpful.
1. Connect Your Employer Brand with the External Brand
It’s important to align the external brand, which is your company’s promise to customers, with your employer brand in order to present your company consistently and effectively. As Forbes mentioned, “fewer than 50% of employees believe in their company’s brand idea, and even less are actually equipped to deliver on it.” If your employees are not engaged, then the strength of your external brand doesn’t matter.
Ideals (slogans, quotes, sayings) as a brand is a great way to keep everyone’s values on the same page and, if this supports your external brand, it can result in better performance. The employer brand should build your work culture and motivate employees to deliver on your company’s promises.
2. Inscribe Your Values on the Wall
Our goal is to make our brand clear & known to everyone stepping into the Marketing Garage office. As values start to emerge so do favourite branded sayings. Write them down! Our favourites all relate to automotive language including tuning, fixing, and popping the hood.
While in a meeting with us, you will see our notebooks put to use. The car notebooks were designed with the Marketing Garage logo & website on the front cover along with a different luxury car for each. They include our brand promise “Move the Needle” on the inside covers.
Take a step into our back office room, and read our brand message on the wall below our collection of hubcaps. “Keep the best and fix the rest” was chosen by everyone here at the Marketing Garage out of a list of our top brand quotes. Internally, it helps us get in the mindset of analytical thinking with audits and checklists so we know what’s working and what isn’t. Externally, this is our promise in performance and precision when delivering results.
3. Wear Your Brand Colours
The Marketing Garage launched about 3 years ago, and we started with the external branding on the building. We transformed this 1889 building into a contemporary Marketing Garage, with our main brand colour as red.

Inside the garage, the colours on our walls are consistent with our brand, with red and shades of grey. It also includes anything you could possibly find at a mechanic shop; different parts of a vehicle and the tools.
We take branding seriously, yet make it fun. For instance, we had split into teams to complete the painting task, with the stripe team and dashboard team. See our painting attempts below!
- Red Racing Stripe; painted on the left wall by Tricia, Skylar, & Selina
- Dashboard; painted on whiteboard by Bob & Mike, where we jot down tasks and notes.
4. Put Great Results Forward
We are performance focused and use a common sense approach; we move the needle. The Marketing Garage Toolbox analyzes brand performance by focusing on delivering tangible, measurable results each month. We find it’s important to put great results front and center. We reward great performance and accomplishments with fun branded items throughout the office to make our brand come to life internally.
Our favourite award was employee created. On display in the main workspace are special hubcaps that are signed by the winners of the month. These hubcaps are given to individuals or teams for the projects that resulted in the best performance. Results from these projects, in graph or picture form, are also hung up throughout the office walls.
