As a Toronto marketing company, it feels like every day we see a new headline about the death of Facebook, Twitter, or other social sites. Unsurprisingly, our clients frequently ask us about where the teens are going these days. Instead of just giving you the stats, we thought we would go a step further and get an actual teenagers opinion. Here’s our intern Lauren’s opinion about the 7 most popular social media sites and apps.
We all know that social media is popular and we all use it, but why? That is, in fact, the real question, why has our world become so revolved around social media and the trends that come with it? My research said that as of 2017 the average person has eight different social media accounts. More than half of the world is using social media on a daily basis. When something is trending we all think that we should download that app and make an account to be like everyone else but are these apps really as popular as you think?
1. Facebook
Facebook came up as the as the most popular social media website, which I could have guessed. Facebook is known to teens like me as an “old people app.” This is because we learned about Facebook from our parents and all their friends. I was, in fact, wrong about that, statistics say that Facebook’s majority age is between 25 and 34 years old. Guess it’s not an old people app after all.
The number of people who check Facebook every day is decreasing. In 2017, Facebook saw a decline of 2.1 million users in the US alone under the age of 25. However, this is small compared to the 1.5 billion active daily users Facebook has worldwide.
2. Twitter
Twitter is the second most used social media app. This shocked me, but after I really thought about it I understood more. Twitter is used by so many different influencers in the world, which gives it a very popular name and trend.
I don’t know many people who use Twitter, however, there are 326 million monthly users. Many different types of people and age groups use Twitter which is why I believe it is so popular. My mom uses Twitter to catch up on the news whereas I use Twitter to read posts from all my favourite Youtubers. Twitter is for sure one of my favourite apps and would most definitely be on my top 7 list.
3. Whatsapp
Whatsapp is the third most used social media app. What?! This ranking surprised me a lot. When I found this out I had to do some more research because I didn’t even know what Whatsapp was. Turns out that Whatsapp is a texting app. Personally, this sounds like an app that is automatically downloaded on your phone that you can use to message between one another. Not very creative, but also not very useful, or at least not for me. I guess Whatsapp is a social trend for texting people in a different way, maybe it makes things easier because of the differences between phones.
The majority of Whatsapp users live in India or Israel, this is probably why I wasn’t as familiar with the app. Knowing this information I can say that Whatsapp being number three on the list does make a little more sense.
4. Instagram
Number four on the list was Instagram. This surprised me but not for the reasons you think. Instagram is very popular and almost everyone I know has an Instagram account, including both my parents. Instagram would be number one on my list because I enjoy going on it and watching videos or seeing what my friends are posting. I find it a very good app for entertainment and also for finding out information on something that has happened or something going on.
Instagram’s popularity is increasing rapidly whereas many of the other apps on this list are staying consistent. Instagram is one of the newest apps on this list which may be why it wasn’t as popular as I thought as it would be. Instagram was launched in 2010 whereas Facebook was launched in 2004, so maybe Instagram will become more popular than Facebook in a few years.
5. YouTube
YouTube came up as number five. This makes 100% sense to me. YouTube is a very popular social media platform which is useful for everyone. These days everyone has become addicted to our phones and watching things whether it is on Netflix, YouTube or on the TV.
1,300,000,000 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute and it’s set to surpass TV as the most watched platform. If that doesn’t yell top social media app then I’m not sure what does. YouTube is one of my favourite social media sites of all time. I use it almost every day so as you can tell I agree with YouTube being on this list.
6. LinkedIn
Number six on the top 7 social media apps was LinkedIn. The majority of people who use LinkedIn are working fulltime and range between the ages of 25 to 44. I personally don’t use LinkedIn that much but that is just because I am young and don’t need a job but if I did I know I can definitely rely on LinkedIn to help.
7. Google+
Google+ is the last app on my list. This confused me. First of all, what is Google+ and why is it so popular? Turns out Google+ is a site just like Facebook but it is set up just like Pinterest.
I don’t think I know anyone at all who uses Google+. Through more research, I learned that Google+ will only be operating till August of 2019.
